The idea for this label and its name stemmed from a personal blog that I maintained. Back when the blog was just an idea, I spent a long time trying to pick the perfect name for it. You see, it wasn't just going to be an online diary for me. It was going to be a place where I could air out the past, giving me the opportunity to confront my demons and move on. I finally rested on the domain name, “Domestic Genocide,” for two reasons:
1) There are many destructive attitudes within family structures that systematically destroy any semblance of a healthy home environment. They're so typical and well-known that many of us can bounce off a substantial list from the top of our head if asked; all of which leave behind a litter of broken dreams, bodies and lives once the poison has run its course.
2) Over the years, the idea of the perfect nuclear family has been disproven time and time again as the most healthy home environment. “The perfect family” has been given many new definitions these past two decades alone and the name I chose is a celebration of that.
Since it was just my blog at the time and I knew that it wasn't going to attract much traffic, I didn't really care about catering to the sensitivities of the masses. I certainly never thought that something like a record label could come out of it until a potential interview subject for my online magazine, Blood or Love, suggested it. Trevor Antonides, who had just started to pick up his old project “darknessofmystery” again, loved the poetry that I had to share from the blog and what the name stood for. From that point onward, it all fell into place after he suggested the label idea. It was too perfect an opportunity for me to pass up since I had several friends abroad, and here in the US, whose musical projects would benefit greatly from a label that they could trust. These people supported me in every way with my writing and I wouldn't have made it this far without them so I feel like it's the least I could do in return.
Domestic Genocide has grown a bit more since then with the addition of three volunteers who are close friends, and several musicians on our roster that I was not previously acquainted with until we signed them. With all these external factors playing a vital role in what started out as a two-man project, I feel that even the name has taken on a different meaning. It has become something that forms a bond between those that have witnessed the evils of the world and face it head on.
As a label, we are founders Sarah Elgindy and Trevor Antonides. JC Denton Anderson is our first volunteer originally recruited from the Blood or Love staff. Benjamin Lazar Glass handles promotions and, for the time being, Lorra Heutmaker handles our social media presence.
We are an independent, donation run record label, focusing on musicians who have been oppressed, who have not been given the opportunity to deliver their message of creativity through music. We are 100% online based and located in various parts of the USA, but we service the world. Our name reflects some of the harshest realities our artists and staff have had to endure throughout their lives. We celebrate solidarity, respect, and offer a platform for their voices to be heard.
We hope that our message of positivity in these difficult times is infectious, so help us spread the word, and make these artist dreams come true.
Live it. Breathe it. Express it!!
Sincerely yours,
Elgindy
